Department of Electrical Engineering

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department was founded in 1958. It offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics, Power Systems, Communications, and Controls. Moreover, Communication engineering has been offered in M.Sc. level through virtual education program, since 2004. Currently, the department has 43 full-time academic staff, a total of 500 full time B.Sc. students, 300 M.Sc. and 110 Ph.D. candidates. The department has received several awards from Kharazmi Prize Winning Award. Also, National Distinguished professor of the year and selected student of the year can be added to the honors of several academic staff and students of this department, respectively. Our graduate students become leaders in their profession by imparting fundamental principles, skills, and tools. Our world-class graduates are eagerly hunted for careers in industry, government, and universities. They can maintain electronics systems and are able to distinguish and assess new related technologies. Department of Biomedical Engineering

The first step for establishing the Biomedical Engineering Department was taken in 1987 when a biomedical engineering laboratory was set up in the Electrical Engineering Department to pursue a project for the development of a cybernetic hand. As activities in this field developed, and in order to meet the growing needs of the society in this area, in 1992 the first independent Biomedical Engineering Department in Iran was established at the university offering a choice of studies in three fields: bioelectronics, biomechanics and biomaterials, leading to the degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. The department began accepting students for a B.Sc. course in medical engineering in 1995. Besides, Virtual Education programs in Medical Information and Communications Technology has been organized for M.Sc. Students in 2004. Currently, the department enjoys the collaboration of21 academic staff to carry a total of 900 full time students. The objective of this department is to provide students with the knowledge of both engineering and medical programs, together with specialist skills in applications of engineering related to medical diagnostic and treatment procedures. With such a background, a wide range of employment opportunities in such areas of design, operation and maintenance of diagnostic tools in hospitals are available for graduates. They are also called upon to give technical advice in the selection and purchase of medical equipment, to assist medical staff in the optimal use of medical equipment and in the technical and engineering management of hospitals, and to co¬operate in medical research projects. Department of Polymer Engineering & Color Technology

Polymer engineering was first introduced as a branch of the Textile Engineering Department at Amirkabir University of Technology. Later on, in 1989, the Department of Polymer Engineering was established. It is now offering B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs in industrial polymer and science and color technology engineering. At present, 27 well-known faculty members are highly involved in research and teaching activities in this department. Also, about 500 undergraduate and graduate and 37 PhD students are currently pursuing their studies in different fields of polymer engineering. Teaching activities and laboratory classes and tutorials allow ideas to be tested in practice and particular themes to be explored in depth. Therefore, the graduates have opportunities in rubber, plastic, fiber, compound material, resin, packing, color and anti¬corrosion coating industries. Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Amirkabir University was established in 1987 offering undergraduate courses in the field of Applied Mathematics with either computer science, physics or operational research. The Department has 37 full-time academic staff and a sum of 414 undergraduate and 132 graduate students in the fields of applied mathematics, pure Mathematics, and computer science. Currently, 45 PhD students are pursuing studies in the fields of pure and applied mathematics. Also, every semester, the Department offers ten subjects in Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science to about 4000 engineering students studying in various departments of the university. The graduates are experts in areas of stochastic, informatics, and mathematics and can support scientific and research activities at various industrial and technical institutions.

Department of Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Food Industry Engineering at Amirkabir University of Technology is one of the oldest institutes for teaching chemical engineering in the country. Among the first established departments of the university, it was founded in 1958. It offers courses at the levels of B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. and has access to all sophisticated instrumentation which are essential for adventurous research and the best teaching. Teaching is based on a combination of lectures, project work, tutorials and practical instruction. Laboratory classes augment lectures and tutorials so that principles learned during lectures can be developed, new concepts introduced and students given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the actual nature of equipment and instrumentation. The department is indebted to the dedication of its 25 teaching staff, some of whom have been nationally recognized as being authorities in their field, for their high quality of teaching and research. Currently, the department is hosting 600 full time students in various fields of specialties. Annually, B.Sc. are accepted in the fields of chemical and petrochemical engineering and food technology and M.Sc. in advanced chemical, biotechnology, hydrocarbon engineering, nano technology engineering, and food technology. Also, Ph.D. students are accepted in various fields of thermodynamic, kinetic, reactor design and food technology. Department of Industrial Engineering & Management Systems

The Department of Industrial Engineering was established in 1976 offering undergraduate courses. With the expansion of its activities, the department began to accept students for the M .Sc. and Ph.D. levels in 1988 and 1993, respectively. Currently, the department employs 26 academic staff members and is presently educating 500 students in various fields of studies. The department offers planning and systems analysis and industrial production at the B.Sc. level, industrial engineering, economic and social systems engineering and systems management and productivity at the M.Sc. level, and industrial engineering at the Ph.D. level. The graduates are able to do feasibility studies of industrial projects and to design, and improve production planning and quality control systems which consist of machines, equipment and human resources. Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering

The establishment of the Department of Civil Engineering coincided with the foundation of Amirkabir University in 1959, but its activities goes back to 1952 as the Institute of Road and Construction Engineering. Later on, in 1984, it was renamed to the Department of Civil and Environment Engineering in order to involve in environmental aspects of civil project. It offers courses at the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels in the fields of structural engineering, earthquake engineering, water engineering, geotechnical engineering, road and transportation engineering, environmental engineering, and construction management. The department has over 40 academic staff and a large body of supporting staff. Currently, over 500 students are pursuing undergraduate studies, approximately 260 students are studying Master of Science, and 60 doctoral students are pursuing studies in the above-mentioned fields. Civil Engineering Department consists of eight academic groups of Construction Management, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Highway and Transportation Engineering, Hydraulics, Structure, Earthquake Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. The teaching courses comprise lectures, tutorials, design, projects, seminars and laboratory works. The balance between the classical subjects and exposure to innovative thinking produces students who are respected and sought after in the country's construction industry such as roads, buildings, bridges, tunnels, reservoirs, water treatment and supply, as well as environmental aspects of these civil works. Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology

The Computer Engineering and Information Technology Department began its teaching and research activities in 1988. Graduate programs at M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels were established in 1989 and 1995, respectively. With a teaching staff of 24, the department offers B.Sc. courses in hardware and software engineering and information technology. Presently, students are also offered M.Sc. courses in computer engineering with three subjects (engineering architecture, software systems, and artificial intelligence and robotics) and information technology with five main subjects (management of information technology, e-marketing, security of information systems, computer networks, and multimedia systems). One of the proud achievements of this department is the establishment of the first PhD course in Iran in computer engineering in 2002. Aditionally, in 2004, two fields of Information and Communications Technology Management, and Computer Architecture have been offered in M.Sc level through Virtual education programs. The research achievements of this department are evident from the number of papers presented at conferences or published in journals by the academic staff every year. Our high class graduates are involved in design, construction, fault detection and diagnosis, modification and operation of systems (e.g. data communications, networks; analysis, computer architecture, parallel processing, software system design, system programming, signal processing, artificial intelligence, expert systems, cryptography and information security). They can also be active in a wide range of research projects from theoretical to industry-related. We can mention of numerous projects which have been completed so far by the department, or under its supervision, at graduate and undergraduate level. Download

Department of Marine Engineering

Department of Marine Technology was found in September 1986. The department has two branches, one in the AUT campus and the other in the Bandar Abbas city which is one of the major sea ports of Iran in the Persian Gulf. After spending 2 years in AUT, the students are supposed to complete their education in Bandar Abbas, for the next 2 years. With its lecture halls, publication offices, refectory, laboratories, book shops, conference hall, administration department, computer center, audio-visual section, library and study rooms, the department carries approximately 400 students at the B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels to provide professionals for marine industry and research centers. With a well-known teaching staff of 12, the department offers B.Sc. courses in marine engineering and naval architecture, M.Sc. courses in naval architecture (structure, hydro mechanical) and offshore structures, and PhD courses in sea engineering. The department has successfully expanded its research activities in the fields of ship structure, hydrodynamics and hydrostatics. Research at this department is mainly based on scientific collaboration with universities outside the country. In 1986, links were set up with the Technical University of Gdansk in Poland for the training of students at the postgraduate level in naval architecture and marine engineering, and still continue. Through high quality experience and knowledge which exist in this department, the graduates have secured their jobs as expertise in design and construction at marine and ship industries or consultant companies .. Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering

Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering is one of the oldest mining institutes in Iran, established in 1973. This department has strong links with mining and metallurgical industries and enjoys friendly, very active and pleasant atmosphere so that, many of the graduates are regular visitors who actively take part in social events held in this department. Presently, about 850 undergraduate and postgraduate students are studding in various fields of mining and metallurgy. The department offers B.Sc. in different courses, such as, extractive and industrial metallurgy, mining exploitation, and mining exploration. At M.Sc. level, courses in metallurgy (material engineering and exploitation) and mining (mineral exploitation, mineral exploration, rock mechanics, and mineral processing) along with PhD courses in mining and extractive metallurgical engineering are also offered to the postgraduate candidates. Currently, the department enjoys collaboration of 35 academic staffs that are~ divided into five academic groups of mining exploitation and exploration, industrial and extractive metallurgy and rock mechanics. With respect to the importance of mineral industry in long term and short term developments of the country, the graduates play important roles in supplying raw and refined materials, food and defense industries, welfare affairs (i.e. building, cloths, road, bridge, machinery, ... ), agriculture, dam construction, energy generation and so on. Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department began its activities in 1958 at the B.Sc. level. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses were started later in 1971 and 1990, respectively. The department offers B.Sc. in production and manufacturing and mechanical engineering. Also, M.Sc. studies in the three fields of applied mechanics, energy conversion and production and manufacturing can be pursued and continued to Ph.D. Today the department is truly a national and international department with over 40 academic staff and 800 students who are studying in undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching is by means of lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials. The studies familiarize with the fundamentals of mathematics, physics and chemistry. Basic sciences are also taught and practical experience is gained in the workshops and laboratories. Therefore, the high quality graduates with fundamental knowledge and practical skill are expected to involve in different industrial activities and team works. The department has contracts with the governmental sectors and individual industries to serve projects. The faculty members of this department are also very active in the area of publications. Department of Textile Engineering

The Department of Textile Engineering began its teaching and research activities in 1958 as the first of its kind in the country. It is one of the oldest departments of Amirkabir University of Technology and is active in the fields of textile chemistry, fibre science, textile technology clothing and textile management at B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD levels. The department is housed in an eleven-story building covering an area of 27,000 square meters, containing 50 well equipped workshops and laboratories. At present the department has a teaching staff of 35 and an undergraduate student body of 370 Students, 131 M.Sc. students in the various fields of textile engineering, and 28 candidates at the doctoral level. The broad range of research currently carried out at this department covers areas concerning the design and control of all aspects of fibers, fabrics, processes and machinery. Department of Petroleum Engineering

The Department of Petroleum Engineering was founded in 2002 in respond to the needs of the oil industry to practical experts in this field of study. Following its establishment, the first B.Sc. students started their course of studies in 2004. Also, at M.Sc. level, courses in oil exploitation, oil exploration, and hydrocarbon engineering have been established at the Departments of Chemical and Mining Engineering which are planned to transfer to this department in near future. Currently, the department has provided scholarship for ten Ph.D. students in exploitation, exploration, and hydrocarbon engineering to answer its future development. International Branch International branch had been established in 2003 at Amirkabir University as a center for a collaborative program with University of Birmingham, UK. This unit offers Bachelor and Master Honor Degrees in several engineering fields with different majors, namely mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electronic engineering, civil engineering, and biomedical engineering. The official instruction language is English and all course syllabuses and regulations are in line with what presently is offered by university of Birmingham. Duration periods are 3 years for BEng degrees and 4Yeard for MEng degrees. Department of Energy Engineering and Physics

The independent Physics and Nuclear Science Department was founded in 1988. Today, with its classrooms, laboratories, library, study room, compute rooms, seminar hall, lecturers' rooms and administration section in an area of 3500 square meter, the department offers courses at the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. 21 full time faculty members are presently involve in various fields of research and teaching activities. The department with about 280 student body offers B.Sc. courses in the fields of solid¬state physics, atomic and molecular physics and nuclear physics. In M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels the offered courses are atomic and molecular physics, solid- state physics, elementary particles physics, nuclear physics, nuclear energy engineering and radiation engineering are offered. In addition to teaching: activities, the department enjoys a very strong research base and good collaboration with major research groups and institutions throughout the country. All courses involve lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes to ensure broaden and integrate understanding of the subject and monitor individual progress. With this high level of skill, the graduates are extensively involved in innovation, research and other activities in nuclear technology, nuclear energy, thermodynamic, and stochastical mechanics. Department of Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace Engineering was established in 1987 as an independent department at Amirkabir University of Technology. Following its establishment, the department made exceptional progress in its teaching and research activities and consequently in 1992, it was granted permission by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology to establish M.Sc. course in aerodynamics. Based on this permission, five students began their graduate studies in that year. Few years later, the M.Sc. degree was changed from aerodynamics to aerospace and included four disciplines of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion and aerospace structures. The department currently has a teaching staff of 16 and a student body of over 200 B.Sc., 80 M.Sc. and 44 Ph.D. candidates. Areas of research include aircraft stability and control, aircraft design, flight simulation, jet engines, aerodynamic design of airplanes in large angles of attack, helicopter dynamics and flight testing. Study at this department covers all aspects of aerospace engineering. Once they complete the course, our graduates will acquire the ability to work on automobile aerodynamics, land-based and offshore structures as well as turbo machines. Download

Mahshar Branch of Amirkabir University of Technology

The Mahshahr branch of Amirkabir University of Technology was established in 2001. This branch was located in the city of Mahshahr in Boshehr Province (south of Iran) for the coming purposes; Training of expertise to respond the needs of enormous and splendid petrochemical industries at B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels and to design special courses in the form of staff development programs for various industries requirements Developing of basic researches which are essential for the technical requirements of petrochemical industries Improving the scientific level of Boshehr province and to facilitate higher education for southern inhabitants in order to provide local expertise for such industries. Currently, 25 full time academic staffs are actively working in this branch for training of 189 B.Sc. and 19 M.Sc. students in the fields of petrochemical and polymer engineering.

Teaching Group of Language

A good language center is essential for any degree course and students, whatever their subject, to gain different skills for writing, speaking, listening and reading of original and new publications which are essential for updating our knowledge with the new investigations. The center of foreign language at Amirkabir University with more than 10 full time academic staff, offers a place to study in peace and quiet, with materials audio-video facilities and assistance. It also offers a wide range of materials and facilities on nearly all subjects.

Teaching Group of Culture and Human Science

This group enj oys the collaboration of 11 full time academic staff to deliver various courses in theology and human science such as, Persian literature, the history ofIslam, Islamic revolution and its foundation, Islamic ethics, and so on.

Teaching Group of Physical Education

The Group of Physical education at Amirkabir University of Technology is using three full time academic staff and some expertise in the fields of physical exercise and training to deliver two courses. The first course gives general information about body exercises and practices and also sports and their playing rules. The second course goes into the details of different sports such as football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, table tennis, karate, and so on.

Teaching group of chemistry

This group began its work in 1958 in the Amirkabir University of Technology's department of basic sciences. Then it continues its activities in computer and sciences department, and since 1989, after dividing of the mentioned department into physics, mathematics and computer departments, it has worked as an independent center. Currently with 4 academic staff, the group presents chemical sciences to the university's different department's students.
