The cultural and student affairs vice president of Amirkabir University, during the welcome ceremony for new students, emphasized that the university is a place for specialized education, stating that it has increasingly focused on nurturing the technical talents of students in its current structure. According to the university's public relations, Dr. Mehrdad Saaviz added that when it comes to support, encouragement, and being brave in the face of failures to rise and start over, the university cannot replace parents in that regard because it is an administrative structure, and none of its departments can substitute for family support.
Dr. Saaviz noted that sometimes parents express that they have entrusted their child to the university and feel at ease, believing it will support their children in all aspects, but that's not the case. He described Amirkabir University as one of the reputable, established, and leading universities collaborating with industry, at the forefront of science and technology, and stressed that, given this description, the university cannot take the place of family attention and support. Some students enter university without a clear goal, and one of the biggest risks for our children is falling into time-wasting and distractions, which often happens due to a lack of purpose.
Dr. Saaviz emphasized the importance of students focusing on their future horizons, reminding that merely going through educational courses won’t provide the necessary motivation to avoid distractions. Therefore, one of the most important collaborative efforts between us and families is to help students find their path and vision—something greater than just studying for a degree or social prestige.
He defined the goal for undergraduate students as acquiring knowledge and strengthening their ability to solve the country’s problems, pointing out that aimlessness among students leads nowhere, and we should encourage them to set noble and higher goals beyond just getting grades. Additionally, students need to understand the true purpose of university education.
He described the university as a flight path toward entrepreneurship, adding that the main goal and meaning of an undergraduate degree is to make students entrepreneurs in areas needed by the country and to produce knowledge-based or technological products. The four-year undergraduate program is designed to ensure that if students don't pay attention, they won't learn how to utilize the tools that the university provides.
Dr. Saaviz highlighted the importance of meetings with entrepreneurs organized by the Scientific Associations Office and the establishment of incubators to support this goal, stating that the essence of an undergraduate education is to prepare students for entrepreneurship. The university’s aim is to develop these facilities to educate specialized, healthy, and committed individuals, which requires infrastructure like welfare, sports, and educational services.
He also referenced the activities of the physical education and health departments, mentioning that sports are a key issue for Amirkabir University. For those needing counseling, the university's counseling center is equipped and ready to assist. The center isn't just for those seeking psychological treatment; it's also for students looking to boost their skills. Whenever students feel they need help managing aspects of their lives, we encourage them to take advantage of counseling services.
He listed educational counseling, personal empowerment, and life enhancement among the services offered by the counseling center. The cultural and student affairs vice president emphasized the crucial need for the counseling center to stay in touch with students' families, stating, "We never want to remove families from the university processes. The counseling center will answer inquiries and serve as a connection point between parents and the university."
Dr. Saaviz noted another function of the Family Relations Office is to facilitate greater family support for students, reminding that parents are now able to have short visits in the dorms. This is particularly important for first-year female students who often face emotional crises when they start living in dormitories, which can lead to various challenges. Parents can stay in dormitory guesthouses during these short visits.
He added that the university has a very structured educational system, and if students aren’t aware of the rules or don’t study them at the start of their academic journey, it could lead to problems. According to university regulations, students' GPAs are calculated, and each student can take 20 credits per semester. If a student’s GPA falls below 12 in a semester, they will be placed on probation, and their parents will receive a notification.
Dr. Saaviz mentioned that if a student is put on probation a second time, parents will again be notified, and the student will enter a program to prevent academic decline. If they go on probation a third time, they will be expelled.
He continued, saying that returning to the university is a difficult process for these students and noted that the allowable duration for undergraduate studies is four years. If it exceeds that, students must obtain permission, so they should aim to pass their courses on time.
He stressed the importance of emotional support from families for students, saying it’s perfectly normal for students to have a low GPA in their first semester as they adapt to the university environment. Parents play a significant role during this period since a drop in GPA can make students feel like failures and diminish their self-confidence. They should be encouraged that grades aren’t everything, it’s about having a passion for learning, and they should focus on the primary goal of entrepreneurship.
