Biosensors Applied in Medical and Health Sectors Developed by AUT Researchers

Ali Sedighi, PhD graduate of Nanotechnology from Amirkabir University of Technology and researcher of the project for “production of non-enzymatic flexible wearable glucose biosensors” explained that diabetes is a metabolic disorder and a global epidemic. The key to diagnosing and controlling diabetes is monitoring the glucose level, and the glucose level must be measured frequently.
He continued: this project aims to produce a non-enzymatic flexible wearable sensor with conventional materials such as cotton textile. Nanomaterials are spread separately on surface of the cotton textile to provide initially the electrical connectivity and finally electrostatic characteristics required to recognize glucose level in human body.
He stressed: the innovative aspect of our work is using new nanomaterials and hybrid compounds and merging them with textiles to be used as flexible wearable biosensors. On the other hand, the wide density range of this non-enzymatic biosensor makes it possible to use this product to measure glucose level not only in the blood, but also in sweat, saliva, and tears.
The project was led by Dr. Majid Montazer and Dr. Saideh Mazinani Professors of Amirkabir University of Technology. The results of this study are published in Journal of Biosensors and Bioelectronics.
