Optimal Performance of Wind Farm

Abstract. Wind power is developing rapidly on both regional and global levels. Over the past ۱۲ years, the global installed capacity of wind power increased from around ۹۴ GW in ۲۰۰۷ to just over ۶۵۰ GW at the end of ۲۰۱۹. Ongoing improvements in turbine efficiency resulted in the wind power to become the most economical option for electricity generation. Careful site selection and appropriate wind turbine selection are two crucial factors in the wind farm development. A small change in wind speed produce greater changes in the commercial value of a wind farm. For example, a ۱% increase in the wind speed is expected to increase ۳% the energy production. Right choice of wind turbine is also important factor in maximizing the wind farm electric power. Worldwide, there are more than ۱۵ large wind turbine manufacturers making more than ۱۰۰۰ different wind turbines. So, choosing an appropriate wind turbine is also a challenging task for wind farm developers. This presentation discusses the importance factors need to be considered for choosing a right wind turbine for a right site. A worked example is also provided, and some recommendations are made for optimal performance of a wind farm project.
