Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory

 | Post date: 2020/12/23 |
The purpose of establishing this laboratory is to have a basic facility for the hydrodynamic test. For the time being, the lab benefits a small tank with some measuring equipment which facilitates several tests such as ship rolling, damaged ship stability, tank sloshing, wedge water entry, slamming and so on. For some other hydrodynamic test, it is possible to add more equipment and sensors.

Tank and its Particulars
A rectangular tank by carbon steel which has the length of 7.05 meters, width of 2.30 meters, height of 1.70 meters and water draught of 1.50 meters is constructed in the lab.  Two transparent windows of about 1.0 square meters have been placed in two walls of the tank.
Model
In most cases a body as model is needed for the testing. Here, the model is manufactured either in the small workshop or by CNC machine outdoor. A typical ship section manufactured in the lab for rolling test is shown in this Figure.
Motion Mechanism
A mechanical system controlled by a computer capable to create angular motion. The type of motion can be regular as well as irregular for a wide range of amplitudes and frequencies. The imposed torque and motion specifications are recorded during the test.
Water Entry Test System
This system is capable to be used for water entry test and recording pressures as well as free surface profile. For the pressure recording a set of high speed pizo-electric pressure transducers are implied. A relatively high speed digital camera is used to capture free surface profile as well as water jet.
Ship Motion Recording System
This system uses a 3DM-GX1 sensor, battery, cable and a laptop computer which may record ship accelerations and angular motions in three directions. The recorded data is manipulated by software to extract standard seakeeping parameters in time and frequency domain. This system can be used in lab or in the field.
