Specification:
Device name: Impact Tester
Device model: 6963
Manufacturer: eCeast
Country of manufacture: Italy

Description of test:
Impact test is one of the standard methods for determining the fracture energy of materials due to dynamic stress. The basis of the impact test is to determine the amount of energy required to break the part due to impact. The purpose of the impact test is to simulate real conditions in order to try to prevent failure and predict sample failure.
One of the most important and common methods of impact testing is the two methods of Aizod and Charpy. The two methods differ only in the way the specimens are placed in the impact tester. Impact testing is a good criterion for determining and classifying the tendency of different plastics for brittle behavior.
Services available:
  • Determine impact resistance
  • Evaluation of failure cross-sectional characteristics
  • Estimation and classification of brittle failure behavior
  • Determination of toughness
  • Evaluation of material sensitivity to gap (notch)
Sample preparation:
Sample dimensions
  • Sample required to perform Izod test:       63.5 mm * 12.7 mm
  • Sample needed to perform Charpy test:     127 mm * 12/7 mm
  • Also, the thickness of the sample used is between 3mm-12.7mm.
  • In addition, a notch is usually created for impact testing. A minimum of three samples is required for each test (an additional sample is also required as a control sample.

Applicable standards:
  • ASTM D256
  • ASTM D4812
  • ASTM D6110
  • ASTM D6160
  • BSI 2782-35
  • BSI 2782-359
  • BSI 7413
  • DIN 53453
  • ISO 179
  • ISO 180
  • ISO / DIS 7628
  • NF T51-1111
Limitations:
This device can provide potential energy from 1 to 25 joules for testing.
