Objective:
The subject of Cell Mechanics and Cellular Engineering is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary subject based on the application of methods and principles from engineering and life sciences to the study of cellular function, and the development of biological substitutes to restore cellular function. Cell Mechanics and Cellular Engineering will be of interest to students and researchers in biomechanics, bioengineering, biophysics, and biochemistry. Aimed at graduate students in different disciplines of biomedical engineering, the objective of this course is to provide a basic understanding of the relationship between mechanical forces and cellular functions in living organisms.

Outline:
-Introduction to cellular architecture
-The cell’s energy system
-Overview of cytoskeleton
-Filaments in the cell
-Elasticity of cellular filaments
-Cell-matrix interaction
-Soft networks in the cell: 2D networks
-Methods to measure the mechanical properties of cells and biomolecules
-Models of cellular biomechanical behavior: 3-D networks; Tensegrity and foams; Rheology of cytoskeleton components
-Biomembranes
-Mechanotransduction: how do cells sense and respond to mechanical events?
-Techniques for mechanical stimulation of cells
-Summary of mechanobiological effects on cells in selected tissues

Grading: Grading is based on final exam (70%), Assignment based quiz (10%), and Project presentation (20%)
