(Department)  Biomedical Engineering         (Division)

 (Level and Major)     Graduate

Course Title              Bioelectromagnetics

Number of Credits       3             Prerequisite

Course Description:
This is an introductory course to the interdisciplinary field of bioelectromagnetics. The emphasis is on tissue and body-level field dosimetrical calculations for non-ionizing electromagnetic frequencies, safety regulation and concludes with a discussion of endogenous electric fields and their possible biological roles.

Course Goals and Objectives:
To introduce the students to the fundamentals of electromagnetic field penetration into tissues and relevant techniques for field computation.

Course Topics:
  • A short review of electromagnetic theory
  • Electrical properties of biological materials and tissues
  • Dosimetry of electromagnetic fields at low and high frequencies
  • Sources of electromagnetic radiation; Natural and Man-made
  • Radiation safety standards and their application
  • Endogenous electric fields and their biological functions

The course aims to:
Hardworking students will learn and understand EM field interactions with the body at the tissue scale, and acquaint themselves with the analytical and numerical techniques for the computation of such fields and their known effects.

Reading Resources:
A variety of book chapters and papers given during the semester, including C. Durney, An Introduction to Bioelectromagnetics

Evaluation

40% Final Exam
30% Midterm Exam
20% Homework
10% Course Project
