Fabrication of Multilayer Nanofiber Membranes Using Plant Extracts and Seashells

Researchers at Amirkabir University of Technology have succeeded in modifying the biocompatible polymer of chitosan with the help of plant extracts to create multilayer membranes that can be used to prevent adhesions in surgery and at the same time, become fixed on the wound site without the need for sutures due to the presence of a layer of bioadhesive inspired by oysters (biped).
Mahvash Shokrollahi, a graduate of AUT in nanotechnology at the department of textile engineering, is the executor of this project. Having mentioned that the design has biological details, she said: "The use of chitosan and its derivatives has properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, so it is a good choice for anti-adhesion membranes."
The supervisors of this project have been Dr. Hajir Bahrami, Dr. Masoumeh Haghbin Nazarpak and Ms. Atefeh Solukmofrad.
So far, two ISI articles have been published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (Q1) and one research paper in the Textiles and Polymers journal. Two other articles are also being written. The first paper is on the construction of multi-layer wound dressings, and the second article will discuss the first ever done dual modification of commercial polypropylene meshes.
