The Vice Chancellor for International Affairs at Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) has highlighted the growing role of smart technologies and artificial intelligence in higher education, emphasizing the need to leverage these technologies to enhance educational quality, improve student services, and expand international academic engagement. She also announced a proposal to establish a National Secretariat for the Smart Internationalization Infrastructure of Higher Education at AUT.
According to the AUT Public Relations Office, during National Symposium on the Development and Smart Infrastructure of Internationalization in Iran’s universities Dr Somayeh Akbari, Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, noted that higher education is currently experiencing one of the most critical periods of transformation in its history. She also pointed that “Over past decades, universities primarily focused on expanding educational facilities, increasing admissions capacity, developing academic programs, and strengthening international relations. Today, however, alongside all these priorities, a new and highly influential factor has entered the equation—smart technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.”
She added that the question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will enter higher education, but rather how universities can effectively utilize this technology to improve the quality of education, enhance assessment processes, develop student services, and expand international academic collaboration.
Dr Akbari emphasized that this issue is particularly significant in the international domain. “Universities today serve diverse audiences from different countries, languages, and cultural backgrounds. Providing appropriate services to these communities, expanding international educational programs, recruiting international students, managing academic collaborations, and responding to their diverse needs will become increasingly difficult without advanced technological infrastructure.”
The AUT Vice Chancellor for International Affairs explained that the meeting addressed topics such as smart education, intelligent assessment and evaluation systems, the recruitment and guidance of international students, and the technological infrastructure required to expand international scientific collaboration.
She described the meeting as an opportunity for sharing experiences, presenting new ideas, and fostering effective cooperation among universities, governmental institutions, and technology driven organizations across the country. The event also provided an opportunity to become familiar with existing capacities and experiences while taking another step toward strengthening smart higher education infrastructure and expanding international academic engagement.
Referring to a proposal by Dr Ehsan Ghabool, Head of the Center for International Scientific Cooperation and Science Diplomacy at the Ministry of Science, Dr Akbari stated that it has been proposed to establish the National Secretariat for the Smart Internationalization Infrastructure of Higher Education at Amirkabir University of Technology, with the aim of fostering national coordination and synergy in developing smart technological infrastructure for international higher education activities.
