Dr. Abbas Soroush, Chancellor of Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT), emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of aerospace at a ceremony marking World Space Week at the university. He commended the collaboration among various student associations in organizing the event and noted that global scientific developments are rapidly moving away from the traditional model of separate disciplines towards interconnected fields with overlapping areas of study. He described aerospace as one of the most interdisciplinary fields, bringing together disciplines such as physics, astronomy, and aerospace engineering while offering diverse opportunities for further study and research.
Referring to Iran’s scientific heritage in astronomy and space-related fields, Dr. Soroush highlighted the contributions of prominent scholars such as Omar Khayyam and Abu Rayhan al-Biruni. He stressed the importance of self-confidence among younger generations, describing the scientific legacy of their predecessors as a valuable foundation for present-day progress. He also announced that, in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, AUT had placed 99th worldwide and first nationally in the Multidisciplinary subject category, attributing this achievement to the efforts of the university’s students and faculty members.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Soroush expressed hope that the country would continue to make progress in space-related fields and emphasized the importance of the dedication and efforts of younger generations and scientists. He also stressed that, just as protecting the skies and space is a worthy undertaking, safeguarding one’s homeland is equally important. Referring to Iran’s rich national and religious heritage, he noted that the verses of the Quran repeatedly draw attention to the heavens, seas, and the wonders of creation.
