Researchers at Amirkabir University of Technology have used plasma to provide an air purification device that can filter viruses and microbial contaminants from the environment without the need for filters and consumables.
According to AUT’s report; Amin Masoumzadeh, a researcher in the project, described air and water microbial contamination, especially viral contamination as a global concern and said: “People exposed to microbial contamination are exposed to a variety of respiratory illnesses and failures and a common way to control air pollution is through the use of filtered purifiers”.
He said that the existing air purifiers are not able to clean the environment; “In response to this, The ‘Ozone Minamin’ group of Amirkabir University of Technology which is active in the field of “Ozone” and its applications started to build air and water purifiers called ‘Air and Water Microbial Refiner’ working on the basis of Ozone production”.
Masoumzadeh noted: “These refiners which work with activated Oxygen (Ozone), direct the air around them into the refiner and break the oxygen molecules in the air using cold plasma technology and energy discharge, The Oxygen is converted to Ozone molecules in a natural process and released in the environment”.
According to Ozone Minamin’s team leader, in addition to air purification, this product can clean the microbial contamination of surfaces by controlled release of Ozone in the environment while in the filtering refiners only the air passing through the filters is refined.
He mentioned the short-term air purification performance and high power to eliminate ٩٩ percent of the pollution in the environment as some of the other characteristics of this device and added: “This feature can be used in operating rooms, CCUs, ICUs, hospital facilities and sterile and special use rooms”.
He also mentioned the low price compared to similar foreign samples and the controlled level of ozone concentration as a competitive advantage of the project and said: “air disinfection and removal of unpleasant odors from the environment and preventing the transmission of pathogens is some of the air purifier device applications and can be used to purify urban drinking water, disinfecting and removing unpleasant odors and prevent algae growth in water tanks”.
The project was implemented by Amin Masoumzadeh, PhD student and head of Ozone Minamin group (Physics- Fusion field) and led by Dr. Davood Iraji, a member of the Physics and Energy Engineering department of Amirkabir University of Technology.
