Nasim Zare, a graduate of Amirkabir University of Technology and the executer of “application of membrane bioreactors in treating water of Iran’s oil fields using prokaryotic consortium” project said, “A wide range of salinity level has been globally reported in produced water from oil fields and most oil fields in Iran have a high salinity level.”
She highlighted, “Applying an indigenous microbial consortium for oil fields is a novel idea which was studied in this project. According to microbiological surveys on halophile microorganisms, identifying the selective microbial consortium has set the scene to investigate capabilities of existing microorganisms and optimal condition for their growth and function. This analysis showed that bacteria have higher species diversity in comparison with archaea. In addition, salt tolerance range and bacteria’s ability to biodegrade hydrocarbons by the identified bacteria suggests that the selective consortium has the potential to be used in treating the produced water”.
It is noteworthy that the main supervisor of this project was Dr. Babak Bonakdarpoor and the main advisor was Dr. Narges Fallah, faculty members of Amirkabir University of Technology. Second supervisor and second advisor in this project were Dr. Mohammad Ali Amoozegar, faculty member of University of Tehran, and Dr. Mahmood Shavansi, faculty member of Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) respectively.
