Researchers at the Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) have developed a hybrid system of chitosan (CS) NP/silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel for releasing dexamethasone to control eye inflammation.
Mohammad Akrami-Hasan-Kohal, a graduate at AUT and the executor of the project "Construction and characterization of a hybrid system of chitosan (CS) NP/silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel for releasing dexamethasone to control eye inflammation" said: "It seems to be necessary to design a suitable drug release system to target the injury site for reducing the dose applied, preventing drug and therapeutically side effects, diminishing extra injections, and reducing costs".
He added: "Our first innovation is fabricating a more stable and controllable release system so that we can enable dexamethasone to be available in the right dosage and for an extended time duration. SEM results showed the existence of open pores with internal links. Moreover, fabricated chitosan NPs and extracted silk fibrin were confirmed by infrared spectroscopy".
Notably, Dr. Mahnaz Eskandari and Dr. Atefeh Solouk, faculty members of AUT, supervised this project.
