The electron microscope in this laboratory is the XL30 model, made by the Philips Company. Currently, the major applications of the microscope are imaging the microstructures, determining the growth direction of crystalline materials and plates, determining the crystal defects and grain’s boundary, and identifying residual stress areas.
Morphology: Since the shape and size of the particles, in this case, is clear, the strength can be discerned.
Object Topography (Mapping): Via revealing the surface characteristics and the internal texture of the sample, it can be found properties such as its stiffness and elasticity.
Crystallography: The electron microscope shows how atoms are arranged in proximity to each other so that can be studied their conductivity and electrical properties.
Composition: This microscope can identify the constituents of the studied phase, therefore it can be determined the properties such as melting point, phase activity, etc.
Specifications of the studied samples
  • Sample Type: Studying minerals, metals, ceramics, polymers, biological materials, etc.
  • Sample Shape: Metal sections, thin sections, powder samples, fiber shapes, metal pieces, polymer, biological samples, etc.
Laboratory Research Activities
  • Qualitative and quantitative mineralogical studies
  • Process mineralogy studies
  • Morphological studies in different metallurgical processes
  • Studying the microstructures of solid materials in various technical and engineering fields
  • studying nanomaterials in various engineering fields (nanotechnology scale research)
  • Studying the fine-grained materials
  • Studying the morphology of particles
Laboratory Equipment
  • Scanning Electron Microscope
  • Coating using the sputtering method: To prevent electrons from concentrating, insulating samples should be electrically conductive by the coating machine. In this laboratory, the sputtering method is carried out with a very thin gold coating.
