Nondestructive Testing Lab.
History

Laboratory of Nondestructive Testing (NDT lab) was created in 1984 for fulfilling practical training in combination with theoretical course for Mechanical (Manufacturing) Engineering students. In the early days, the students had to practice to learn the theoretical concepts as well as skills of some NDT methods such as Liquid Penetrants, Magnetic Particles and Visual.
During 1984-1987, the lab was equipped with Ultrasonic and Eddy current instruments.
In 1991, X-Ray lab was established, for safety measures, in a separate place along with film developing facilities.
In 1995, Acoustic Emission testing facilities was installed.
Nowadays NDT lab is changing into a research center where, B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD students are working on their final projects as well. Until now four PhD and twenty M.Sc. students have finished their projects in NDT lab.
The lab has done some research projects ordered by various sections of industries.

Research fields

- AE Technique
  • Study on damage mechanisms in polymer based composites under various modes of loading
  • Study on stress corrosion cracking in stainless steels
  • Study on mechanical wear between two rubbing surfaces such as bearings and sliding surfaces
  • Characterization of leakage flow formed from pressurized chambers or pipes
  • Monitoring of tool cutting conditions in machining processes

- Ultrasonic Technique
  • Evaluation of residual stresses in metals caused by various forms of manufacturing processes such as heat treatment, plastic deformation, peening, machining and welding
  • Visualization of defects in materials
  • Mechanizing of detection of girth weld defects in pipelines

- Eddy current
  • Characterization of surface conditions such as grain size, microstructure and fibrous structure in metals
  • Evaluation of surface residual stresses in metals
  • Measuring the tensile stress field in metallic wires
